Help! How do I use the cruise control on my Smart 453? Do I still have to keep pressing the pedal? [Facepalm] My Murano allows me to relax my feet. Is it broken, or is it supposed to be like this?

My wife bought an 18-year-old used car, and today I drove it for a few dozen kilometers. I have a habit of occasionally resting my hand on the gear shift. When I did that, I noticed an issue. When shifting from second to first gear, I felt a slight "ka-ta" sensation! The sound is very faint, and you probably wouldn't notice it without your hand on the gear shift. Is this indicating a problem?
